Innovative roofing solution ensures weatherproofing and design freedom
In the realm of modern architecture, marrying aesthetic vision with practical functionality often poses unique challenges. The Mapledown project, a contemporary residential property envisioned by Brendan Kilpatrick Architect, exemplifies this delicate balance.
Seeking to utilise brick tiles for their timeless appeal, the project faced a challenge; how to overcome the inherent lack of waterproofing capabilities from brick tiles without compromising design integrity. The team at Brendan Kilpatrick Architect took on the challenge of sourcing a roofing solution that not only addressed the waterproofing concerns but also empowered the architects with unparalleled design freedom.
Situated in a suburban landscape, the Mapledown project is a 2,475 sqft new-age domestic property that boasts expansive living spaces and meticulously landscaped grounds. Recognising the need for a comprehensive waterproofing solution that wouldn't compromise the architectural vision, consultant architect Ali Rashid turned to Onduline and its innovative sub-roof system.

ISOLINE LOW LINE Sub-Roof
ISOLINE® LOW LINE is the only sub-roof system in the UK to be BRE tested and BBA Accredited to as low as 10o with a 30-year guarantee. Compatible with any roof tile, this lightweight bituminous underlay sheeting is fixed below the primary tile or slate roof covering, acting as the primary waterproofing layer of a roof. Thus, making roof tiles a secondary line of defence. ISOLINE® LOW LINE’s versatility in accommodating any roof tile type promises to preserve design flexibility, a cornerstone of the creative process.

Increased ventilation and airflow
Furthermore, due to the corrugations, the sub-roof system allows increased ventilation and airflow both above and below the sheet, and tile battens positioned above the corrugations allow moisture to drain to the eaves which, with the enhanced ventilation, maintains excellent moisture control within the cavity. By incorporating this innovative system, the Mapledown project not only mitigated the risk of water ingress but also unlocked new dimensions of creative expression.
Project Architect, Ali Rashid, said:
