ONDUVILLA: Step-by-Step Installation
Achieving that clay tiled look in a few simple steps with ONDUVILLA
ONDUVILLA TILES
Clay roof tiles have been a traditional part of the UK’s roofing landscape for hundreds of years. It’s aesthetically pleasing and suits a wide range of building types. But this popular style can also be achieved using more lightweight and easy to install materials, without sacrificing performance.
Here, we explain how installers can get that clay tiled look by using durable corrugated sheeting.

Popular choice with roofing professionals
There are many reasons why corrugated roofing sheets are such a popular choice with roofing professionals. Not only are they incredibly easy to work with, the material is so well suited to a wide range of applications.
Today they are available in an increasing number of formats and a growing range of colours. They are ‘also on trend’ with the current focus on sustainable building solutions, comprising 50% to 60% of recycled fibres.
With Onduline’s ‘clay tile’ alternative, ONDUVILLA, installers can cover the building’s roof quickly and efficiently, in a practical and long-lasting way, providing an aesthetically pleasing, very durable, water tight solution.
Appropriate for both renovation and new-build schemes, the sheets can be applied to all types of projects. These include shopping centres and public buildings, agricultural buildings such as stables, and domestic uses such as home offices, orangeries, summer houses, car ports and sheds.
It also has the advantage of being suitable for shallow pitched roofs, down to 15% or 9°. With a weight of only 1.27 kg per tile and a thickness of 3 mm, these tiles give a lightweight, robust roof requiring minimum maintenance.
ONDUVILLA has a 15-year weatherproof guarantee and, containing no metal, it will never rust. It also contains no hazardous substances, making it completely safe.
Installation guide
Whilst corrugated roofing systems are renowned for being simple to install, mistakes can still happen, and we do get a number of calls to Onduline’s technical team where installers need some installation guidance or advice.
Onduline recommends the following tools for installing ONDUVILLA:
You will need a hammer, snips, knife, tape measure, course bladed handsaw and lubricating oil so it doesn’t bind while cutting. We would always recommend using a circular saw, if available.
For PPE, wear safety gloves, goggles and a safety hat. Always make sure you are working from a secure platform.

Step 1: check the condition of your roof and have the right tools and safety equipment
Make sure the roof is of good condition. It really is worth spending a little time on this, and any necessary renovation, before you start. The decking needs to be thick enough, between 15mm and 20mm, to support nail penetration, otherwise you will need to overlay the roof with battens.
The installation of the ONDUVILLA items is always done in the opposite direction to the prevailing winds.

Step 2: Measure your roof
Remember, always measure twice so you only fix the job once. Measure the slope of the roof using an inclinometer, using this information we can select the correct fixing specification. Measure the width along the verge at the end, and the length along the eaves.
Step 3: Selecting appropriate support
When fixing onto a roof supported by purlins, the minimum slope you can fix onto is 17°, the tile strip must be fixed on purlins that are set a maximum 32cm apart. When fixing onto a roof deck, the minimum slope you can fix the tile strip onto is 9°. The tiles are fixed to the decking at a maximum distance of 32cm apart. It is essential you choose the correct fixing to create a durable, long lasting roof covering.

5: Eaves and ridge support
When positioning the eaves batten make an allowance for a 5cm tiles overhang at the eaves. Fix an additional batten at the ridge to accept a ridge tile fitting. It is essential that this is correctly aligned.
6: Cutting
The ONDUVILLA tiles can easily be cut across the corrugations by scoring with a knife and splitting into two parts. Use a lubricated course bladed saw, or preferably a circular power saw, to cut the tiles down their length.

7. Fixing the tiles strip
Firstly, position the foam fillers, which will be covered by the first row of tiles. To optimise the look, the 3D shadow line should be to the upside of the roof. Installation of the tiles is done from eave to ridge.
Lay the tiles square to the eaves and the verge line and fix into position, screwing through the top of the corrugation between the two embossed lines into the batten beneath. Remember to start alternative courses with a half tile to stagger the rows.
Fix the tiles by aligning the pre-formed guidelines to form the tile end lap and allow a single corrugation side lap. The remaining tiles can then be fixed, remembering to check alignment as you do so.

8. Verges
Next we use the ONDUVILLA verge piece to seal the verge. Should the corrugation section not align with the verge, either extend the roof edge to the tile corrugation or bend the edge of the tile against the timber batten and then overlay with the verge piece. Use snips to trim the verge units together at the roof apex.
9. The ridge
Start with placing the remaining foam fillers and then fix an ONDUVILLA ridge piece on top of these. This completes the ridge detail for the install.

ONDUTISS Membranes
To further preserve the waterproofing of roofs and buildings, Onduline recommends ONDUTISS high vapour permeable membrane, suitable for cold and warm roof applications, to provide a secondary layer of protection against driving rain or snow.
