Cardiff Supermarket roof refurbishment
Smooth Refurbishment of Supermarket Roof with ISOLINE LOW LINE
This supermarket re-roof project required the roof to be stripped of existing roof tiles due to leaks, and a complete re-roof, which involved keeping the existing battens and laying Northstone Dunluce concrete tiles.
Once the tiles were removed, the ISOLINE LOW LINE system was laid on the existing roof structure, which ensured complete waterproofing and allowed the store to remain open during installation of the new roof.

Challenges
In the world of commercial roofing, unforeseen challenges can arise at any moment, and the need for innovative solutions becomes evident.
A recent project to refurbish the roof of an open supermarket highlighted the significant role that the ISOLINE LOW LINE sub-roof system from Onduline can play in ensuring the safety and continuity of operations despite unexpected setbacks.
Background story
The project began with the task of replacing the aging roof tiles on the supermarket, which was open to customers throughout the refurbishment process. Given the nature of the supermarket’s operations and the need to maintain customer safety and store integrity, the removal of the old tiles took place outside of regular working hours. The team began early morning shifts, to remove the old tiles before staff arrived and before the store opened for business.
Early Setbacks: Noise Complaints and Project Delays
During the first few days of installation, a new challenge arose. The local council received noise disturbance complaints from nearby residents about the early morning works. As a result, the council issued a stop-work notice, halting all roofing activities temporarily.
Despite the work stoppage, the contractors were able to make significant progress in a short amount of time. By the time the works were paused, most of the supermarket’s roof had already been covered with the ISOLINE LOW LINE sub-roof system. This ensured that the store remained watertight during the interruption, providing peace of mind to the store operators who were concerned about potential leaks.
ISOLINE LOW LINE: A Key Player in Protecting the Roof
What followed was a two-month waiting period before the project could resume, due to the need for council approval. During these two months, the region experienced severe rainfall, and the supermarket’s car park was flooded with up to a foot of water in some areas. The heavy rain posed a significant risk of water ingress into the building, potentially leading to damage to the store and products.
Thanks to the early installation of ISOLINE LOW LINE, the roof remained watertight
throughout this period. The system’s robust, water-resistant properties ensured that despite the flooding, the roof stayed intact, preventing any leaks or water-related damage to the store’s interior. The watertight coverage provided by ISOLINE LOW LINE was crucial in protecting the property, ensuring that when the rains came, the store’s operations and assets were safeguarded.
Smooth Resumption of Work After Delay
Once the council granted permission to resume works, the contractors were able to pick up exactly where they had left off, without having to worry about any damage or deterioration from the halted work.
The ISOLINE LOW LINE system had provided a solid, reliable cover that kept the store dry and secure for the entire duration of the work stoppage.
This meant that the project could continue efficiently, minimizing delays and reducing the risk of further issues.
The Role of ISOLINE LOW LINE in Modern Roofing Projects
The ISOLINE LOW LINE sub-roof system from Onduline played a critical role in overcoming the challenges faced during this supermarket roof refurbishment project. Designed as an underlay for pitched roofs, the system offers an innovative solution that provides excellent waterproofing capabilities, high impact resistance, and superior durability.
By ensuring that the roof was watertight even in the face of heavy rainfall and delays, ISOLINE LOW LINE proved to be an indispensable component in maintaining both the safety of the building and the continuity of the project.
As the project nears completion, the success of using ISOLINE LOW LINE underscores its importance in modern roofing applications, especially in high-risk environments like commercial spaces. It also serves as a reminder of the value of having reliable, weather-resistant systems in place that can protect structures during unforeseen setbacks.
The supermarket’s roof refurbishment project, despite its initial obstacles, is a prime example of how the right materials and solutions can safeguard operations, mitigate risks, and keep projects moving forward—no matter the challenges that arise.
