What you will need

  • Tape measure

  • Timber frame

  • Timber battens

  • Timber slats

  • Wood screws

  • Wood glue

  • Electric screwdriver

  • Electric drill

  • Hand saw

  • Hack saw

  • Cutting bench

  • ONDULINE EASYFIX roofing sheets

  • ONDULINE universal screws

  • ONDULINE VERGE

Step 1: Get your measurements

Before you begin building your storage space, it’s important to gather the measurements of your bins and the space you’d like to fit them into, considering the space between the frame of your bin storage and the bins themselves to ensure a good fit. If you’re looking to hide more than one bin, to keep your frame sturdy, it’s best to put a vertical timber post between each bin at the front and back of the frame.

To help shed any rainfall from the roof, ONDULINE EASYFIX should be positioned at a slight downward angle – to a minimum pitch of 10 °. This means it’s important to remember the back frame posts should be slightly higher than the front two and cut at the correct angle for your structure.

It’s also a good idea to double-check your dimensions to ensure you’ve got them right and draw a to-scale plan to use as a guide when you begin construction.

Step 2: Choose your timber

Once you’re happy with these, it’s time to decide which size timber will work best for your frame. The thickness of the wood will impact the size and structure of your overall design, so it’s important to take this into account when making your choice. As your bin store will be situated outdoors, we recommend choosing pressure-treated timber; resistant to rot, decay and insect damage, this type of wood will help your storage unit last much longer.

Step 3: Get your materials and cut them down to size

Using your measurements, work out the amounts, sizes and angles of the timber for the frame, the timber slats for cladding, the battens for roofing, and how many ONDULINE EASYFIX sheets you need for the roof.

For example, to construct the frame for one wheelie bin, you would need 11 pieces of wood cut to size for the frame in total - 4 vertical posts for the corners, 4 horizontal timber pieces to form the top of the frame and 3 to form the bottom.

When measuring the roofing size, remember to account for a 3.5 cm overhang at the front to help direct rainfall.

To cut ONDULINE EASYFIX roofing sheets, you can use several tools depending on your preference and the precision required:

Recommended Cutting Tools:

  • Circular Saw: Ideal for straight, clean cuts. Use a coarse-toothed blade for best results.uk.onduline.com
  • Jigsaw: Suitable for curved or intricate cuts.
  • Hand Saw: A coarse-toothed handsaw can be used for manual cutting. Applying a bit of oil to the blade can help reduce friction and make the cutting process smoother.uk.onduline.com
  • Utility Knife: For very thin or small sections, a sharp utility knife can be used, though it may require multiple passes.

If you don’t feel confident sawing the timber to size yourself, you can ask an employee at the DIY shop to do this for you instead. If you opt to cut your materials yourself, remember to wear the correct PPE at all times (gloves and protective goggles) to avoid injury.

Step 4: Paint or treat your wood

Once you have your timber cut to the right sizes, treat them all with a wood preservative to help your bin storage withstand the elements and last longer. Once completely dry, you can then paint your timber to add a splash of colour or begin assembling the frame.

Step 5: Build your frame

Start by lining up the front pieces of your frame (the vertical pieces and the horizontal top piece) and attach them together using wood glue. Wait for this to dry and then secure them with screws. Once the front has been assembled, follow the same process with the back, and then attach the front and back together with the remaining pieces.

Step 6: Attach the cladding

After the frame is secured, you can then screw on the timber slats to create your cladding, spacing them evenly apart. Start with the top panel on one side, screwing to the back panel and then the front and work your way down, repeating the process on the other side and the back of your frame.

Step 7: Install the roof

With the frame and cladding now complete, you can move onto the roof. Before attaching the EASYFIX sheet, first fix the battens vertically across the top of your frame. The number of battens required will be dependent on the size of your roof, and they should be spaced equally at a maximum of 37cm apart.

Once these are in place, line up your roofing sheet with the corrugations running vertically, remembering to leave that 3.5cm overhang at the front. Once you’re happy with the positioning, start by laying your ONDULINE EASYFIX sheets with a minimum overlap of one corrugation if more than one sheet is required. Then, secure each sheet using at least 15 ONDULINE universal screws, fixing through the corrugation into the battens and square timber frame.

If you’re making a roof that will lift up, create a frame with four timber pieces and the required number of battens to attach your EASYFIX sheet to. Then attach this lid to the rear of your design using heavy-duty hinges.
