Nestled in the East Lothian countryside is the location for the brand-new, picture-perfect stable block belonging to Fran Wilkinson and her family.
This 85m2 project is designed in an ‘L’ shape, containing four stables, a wash bay, a tack room and a hay stable, all of which has been constructed using lightweight roofing systems from Onduline Building Products.
Practical, durable and beautiful
Fran said: “When it came to designing the new stables, I was keen to have something that was not only practical and durable, but that looked beautiful too. Having something that blended in with the loveliness of our surrounding area was the key goal really.”
Creating a home for Fran’s three horses, and a further two on livery, the stables have been crafted by a local joiner and builder using Siberian Larch, topped with Onduline’s CLASSIC brown sheeting, providing a perfect colour match with the timber cladding and the golden sand arena, resulting in a timeless look.
Noise dampening material
Fran said: “Aesthetics were an important part of this project and the soft brown roof blends in perfectly with the stable surroundings. But, I also wanted something that wasn’t noisy. So many stables and outbuildings have metal roofing and it’s very frightening for the animals when it rains and all you can hear is that thunderous pounding noise.”
Being made from bituminous sheets, the ONDULINE CLASSIC roofing system actually absorbs the noise, meaning they’re up to four times quieter than metal sheeting, when rain is falling on them. This makes them perfect for stables, sheds, studios, pet shelters and other garden buildings.
Fran concludes: “You ask anyone what they put on their stables and the answer is simply, Onduline. The end result is a truly beautiful stable – the horses are happy here, so I couldn’t ask for more!”
