Architect Russell Jones has ‘called time’ on a former Victorian beer store and workshop in London, turning it instead into a modern, stylish studio.
The project, in Tottenham, sits behind a Victorian beer sellers, and while the original brick walls have been retained, ONDULINE CLASSIC bituminous roofing and cladding sheets have been added, giving it a striking look while blending with the aesthetic of the local area.

Cost effective and sustainable solution
Russell selected ONDULINE CLASSIC as a cost effective and sustainable solution that met stringent requirements outlined by planning authorities, which requires builds to blend in with the locality. The fast-to-fit and easy to use ONDULINE CLASSIC bitumen sheet is lightweight at only 3 kg/m² and easy to cut, saving contractors time and money by removing the need for specialist tools.
Converted Victorian pub
Russell said: “This was an exciting project to be involved with. The developer involved purchased the old Victorian pub with the idea of converting the unused brick workshop at the rear of the property into a new studio. With a limited budget, in order to control costs and simplify the construction process, all materials were chosen for their ease of use and availability from local timber yards and builders merchants.

Perfect product
“As a result, when it came to deciding on the materials, its cost effectiveness and ability to resemble the local buildings was important. We spotted a number of garden sheds in the area that used the ONDULINE CLASSIC sheets, and decided it would be the perfect product for the converted workshop.
“The design of the new building clearly distinguishes it from the original, with its new external walls and roof cladding in matt black ONDULINE CLASSIC. The exterior and the building’s profile nods to the sites original heritage, whilst still maintaining a fresh and sustainable approach.
The new studio has been designed with open plan living in mind, with the kitchen and dining area spilling out into the courtyard, the space is maximised. The matt black of the specified ONDULINE CLASSIC sheets has been contrasted throughout the project with the use of plywood to line the walls and ceilings.
The ONDULINE CLASSIC roofing solution is BBA accredited, which ensures the product’s quality and suitability. Manufactured from 50-60% of recycled content, ONDULINE CLASSIC is an ideal eco-friendly solution and comes with a 15-year water tight guarantee that offers customers peace of mind that not only is the sheeting aesthetically pleasing, but it is also durable and able to withstand extreme weather conditions.
